Training Insights - Still Relying on Static-Only CDC Signoff? Introducing the JasperGold CDC App!

RTL designers are creating increasingly complex designs, and are under relentless pressure to provide assurance that the designs are complete and correct, before handing off the designs for RTL verification and implementation. This assurance needs to be provided at the block/IP level as those become mature enough for handoff, and again once the design is integrated to subsystem or chip level. Recently, the multitude of asynchronous clock domains, driven by dynamic power optimization and multiple reset domains have added a lot of complexities to the design. 25 to 35% of the re-spins are contributed by clocking issues while reset scenarios will only add to the magnitude! This ever increasing complexity, the intense cost, as well as schedule pressure has driven the need for comprehensive clock and reset domain crossing checks (CDC/RDC) to be performed early as part of RTL signoff.

In my previous blog on the Cadence® JasperGold® Superlint App few months ago, I highlighted the importance of adopting the "shift left" concept in the Design and Verification flow which is, of course, highly important with CDC/RDC verification as well. Similarly, in such an environment where SoC design risks have ballooned to extreme levels, approaches based just on conventional methods like structural analysis and limited functional checks followed by manual dispositioning of violations leaves a significant risk of still finding critical CDC/RDC bugs late in the cycle. To avoid the high cost of such late bugs, a comprehensive CDC signoff methodology is required. Such a methodology would augment traditional structural checks with functional checks and metastability-aware verification.

The JasperGold CDC App is a holistic CDC and RDC verification solution that:

- Provides comprehensive structural analysis

- Has a lot of productivity features including auto waivers which makes the analysis very efficient

- Enables functional protocol checks and constraint validation

- Has metastability aware verification capabilities using formal and simulation

The difference between a conventional structural only approach and what JasperGold CDC App offers is as clear as the difference between assuming circuits are working as expected and proving they are! With best JasperGold formal-based RTL signoff technologies, designers have access to richer functional checks and formal-powered intelligent debugging fully integrated with powerful JasperGold Visualize debug environment. Designers can perform signoff with robust, reusable and CDC-clean RTL code in the verification and implementation phase, shortening overall time to market and significantly improving the design quality.

“We’ve identified functional and structural CDC issues earlier in the RTL signoff phase using the JasperGold CDC App. Eliminating these bugs earlier in the process has increased the quality of our designs and saved us between two and four weeks on the design and verification time for each of our IP.” said one of our JasperGold CDC App customers. "Our goal with JasperGold CDC is zero unverified CDC/RDC waivers for all designs," stated another.

In order to hear more about JasperGold CDC App I am glad to invite you to join Cadence Training and Sr. Principal Product Engineer Bijitendra Mittra for our free, one-hour live webinar “Still Relying on Static-Only CDC Signoff? Introducing the JasperGold CDC App” where he will explain and detail how you can use the Cadence JasperGold Clock Domain Crossing (CDC) App to efficiently run structural CDC/RDC analysis followed by comprehensive functional analysis.
